A Trustee’s Duty

There can be no higher duty of a trustee than the safety of the students entrusted to you.

The Agua Dulce Airport

As you know, on January 22nd, 2005, at the request of Supervisor Antonovich, Regional Planning is holding a revocation hearing, which could in fact close the airport forever. Regardless of your political and personal views, you all must acknowledge that children in a school in the take-off and landing pattern of an airport are far more at risk, both for injuries and death, than children that are not in a take-off or landing zone of an airport.

Therefore, your board needs to take a position supporting the termination of the permit for the airport.

It’s not about the political issue of supporting the airport, owners, and hangers-on. It’s simply about the safety of the children entrusted to your care.

From a financial basis, also be aware that if you ever intend to expand the school in Agua Dulce or replace the temporary modular buildings with permanent buildings, the state opposes funding any school located within 2 miles of an airport, much less one in the crash zone.

Therefore, along with placing the students in danger, support of the airport’s continuing operation places the taxpayers in economic danger.

And what did the school board do? NOTHING

Here is the story we hope to never have to run

30 Students killed in noontime crash

Agua Dulce - The near future - 30 Elementary students were killed today when a small twin took of in the normal takeoff pattern for the Santa Clarita Valley Regional Airport (Formally known as Agua Dulce Airpark). The recommended takeoff pattern was to make a quick turn and climb over a small mountain to avoid the School. In this case the pilot apparently failed to follow the pattern.

As school was at lunch, over 400 kids were in the playground. Many were burnt and maimed. They were transported directly from the school yard by med evac helicopters.............

This is from the 2-25-95 Vanguard when the community defeated by over 65% vote to stop the county purchase of the Airport.
