4-16-04 When pressed on the process, we found that the superintendent contacted staff and administrators to determine who should be on this community committee. Surprise, surprise, each of the proposed 11 persons had made public statements supporting the high school bonds that the voters have rejected three times.
Many of the people on the proposed committee were on the campaign committee for the bonds. Most of the 11 have stated that nothing has higher priority than the temporary Vasquez High School.
The education code clearly states that this committee is to be representative of the community, and one-half of the community has repeatedly voted no on Vasquez High School bonds. It would seem that half of this representative committee should be made up of people who oppose the bonds.
When the hand picked Vasquez advocates were to be appointed to this committee on April 15th at a special, virtually secret school board meeting. But over 50 residents turned out to complain about the closing of the Acton School and the appointment of this biased committee.
Only one proposed committee member attended the board meeting and even he opposed the selection method.
The board, led by an outspoken Marty Barofsky, listened to the public and tabled the appointment of the committee until a new application is circulated to the general community. Then the board will hopefully appoint a committee that is more balanced.
We are requesting the school provide to us, in electronic form, the information and application so we can inform the community by placing them on-line, allowing residents to submit applications to the school to participate on this committee. Then this committee can determine what property, if any, is surplus in the community and make their recommendations to the school board.
