Special meeting 11-7-96

10-26-96 On November 7, 1996, at 7:30 PM, there will be a special meeting at the High Desert Library, devoted specifically to site selection issues concerning Vasquez High School. Report on the 11-7-96 special meeting

The community will be allowed to speak and present their opinions and hear more about the site committee's studies. An alternative group, led by Charles Brink, has asked to be placed on the agenda to explain:

  1. The wrong information presented in the site studies.
  2. Whether or not they need to build a new high school, considering the new elementary school they will be building which will relieve loading pressures on the schools.
  3. Whether or not you will want your sixth grader moved to the middle school or kept with the elementary students.
  4. Whether you want the K to third students in a separate school from the fourth to fifth students in Acton.

It appears that one of the results of this bond they want to pass is going to be to vastly enlarge the capacity of the school district so that more students can transfer in from outside the district.

The law is abundantly clear that if you have space you have to allow students to transfer. While it is a good compliment to our district, there are some other benefits:

  1. Special Education kids who cost up to ten times as much as we are paid to educate them, can't transfer.
  2. We get the students who care more about education.
  3. No transportation costs, they have to be brought to the school by their families.

This makes them the least costly students to educate.

One question is simply, do we as taxpayers want to spend a lot of money on a tax so that students from the Antelope Valley can transfer into our school district?

Come to the meeting on November 7th and be ready to present your own opinions.
