11-12-02 Sour grape letters from the pro bond group that was soundly defeated.
Dear Friends and Neighbors:
Thank you to all the volunteers in Acton and Agua Dulce who worked so hard to try to build a permanent high school for the children of our communities. A special thanks to Sheila Cook, Acton chairperson for Yes on Q. Thank you also to all of you who went out and voted Yes on Measure Q. You truly understand the spirit of America. You put the needs of your community and your country first. You didn’t ask "What’s in it for me?" You recognize that what distinguishes
Us as Americans is that we take care of each other.
We take care of the young by providing them with the best possible education and preparing them for the future. We take care of the aged by paying social security taxes to make sure they have food and shelter when they can no longer work. One generation takes care of the next. That’s the American way. That’s the way all the other unified school districts in L. A. County saw it too.
We are the only district in L.A. County that did not pass its local school bond measure. Please see the election results as posted on the Registrar of Voters web site at the end of my letter.
The supporters of Measure Q recognized the need to provide a permanent high school for the children of this community for generations to come. We listened to our teachers, administrators, and students. We saw first hand the problems with the temporary high school. We stepped up to the challenge by offering the community a solution. We thought if we all contributed a little, the children would gain a lot, and the community would be stronger for it. But not all of the voters agreed with us.
Today I challenge Tana Lampton, and all of the people who worked so hard to defeat Measure Q by voting no, to come up with their solution to this problem. How do YOU propose to build the children of our community the high school they so desperately need?
Manu of you said there are other ways to build a permanent high school. Please share that information with us now. Measure Q would have allowed us to build them a high school in 18 months. When will you build them a high school? We are eager to hear your solution to this very pressing problem. The ball is now in your court. Where do we go from here?
Congratulations to all the other school districts in California who showed that they value education, their children, and their communities by passing their local school bonds.
Sincerely, Virginia Applen, Friends of Vasquez High Yes on Q AD chairperson
Congratulations Acton-Agua Dulce:
The vote is in and Acton-Agua Dulce has the dishonorable distinction of being the only school district in the state to vote down the school construction bond. If you think you have saved yourself another tax, think again. We will now pay for the rest of the state’s school construction because Prop. 47 passed! When (not "if"), we build a permanent High School, the entire cost will be paid by the residents of Acton-Agua Dulce, not shared with state funds from Prop. 47!
Diana Baker, Acton
Editors note
Baker is the long time head of the union that would have receive another raise to add to their already blotted salaries as a result of this bond. Prop 47 in not a property tax and does not increase your property taxes. It is paid existing state revenue and unless the state increases sales tax or income tax you will pay no additional taxes.
It makes you wander what garbage and lies the Union teachers are filling our kids heads with.
