Delivered at the Acton Agua Dulce School Board meeting on 5-13-04
This is the net savings occurs by returning 13 of the 14 Scottsman Modulars now located at the Red Rover site and replacing them with 13 Modulars from the Acton site.
The savings are based on the cost to move the Modulars, the professional movers for the contents, and the teachers stipends. Included is $3,000 per unit to re-paint and re-carpet (in the school colors), the modulars.
The savings are based on the existing Scottsman contract which terminates this coming October. It is possible a renewal contract might be less, or again, it could be more, but still the savings will still be substantial. It would impact the general fund in 2005 by $24,724 of the $180,000, which the district has in excess of the 3% reserve as listed in the second interim report. In 2006 it would increase the general fund by $53,976 and reimburse entirely the $39,000 spent from the deferred maintenance fund in 2005.
Starting in 2007, it would increase the general fund by $92,976 for every year that the Scottsman lease would have to be continued to house students at Red Rover.
This is a no brainer. The Banderas/Dusick board rented new modulars at a five year cost of over 500,000, when in fact the district had unused modulars at various sites that could have been used. This is an outrageous example of waste of taxpayers funds. This waste helped defeat the bond to build a permanent high school. If the board does not take immediate corrective action to save this 1/3rd of a million dollars, while infuriating the community with its ridiculous boundary changes, closing the Acton School, and eliminating class size reduction in Third grade and Kindergarten, it will fan the flam of the existing distrust and rumored recall of the board and support the widespread belief that there has been substantial financial mismanagement by the district.
If the board adopts this savings plan, which keeps Vasquez students in place at Red Rover in freshly redecorated portables and allows full class size reduction then you will be the heroes instead.
