Here are the proposed new stop signs to slow down the commuters through Acton.
Testimony by Charles Brink at February 25, 1997 Special Meeting
We have a consistent problem in the community of Acton with commuters surging down our rural roads in an attempt to bypass the freeway congestion. This recently has resulted in a death in our community.
What some of the commuters are doing now is jumping off the freeway at Escondido, proceeding down Escondido where it turns into Syracuse, then down Crown Valley, across on Gillespie, and then north on Soledad Canyon. More will be doing this as the freeway is widened to four lanes, which then merge to two just after the Escondido off ramp, creating a bottleneck.
Commuters use Sierra Highway as an alternate but that used has been reduced with the 4 way stop signs at Crown Valley and Santiago.
It is the policy of other jurisdictions to place stop signs to slow down and prevent commuters from using neighborhood roads as high speed commuter bypasses. It is my request, along with others in the community, that a number of 4 way stop signs be erected in our community at the following intersections:
Escondido and Ward Road
Crown Valley and Syracuse
Santiago and Soledad
Soledad and Sierra Highway
Red Rover and Sierra Highway
Crown Valley and Antelope Woods (primarily to protect our children at that crosswalk)
The speed limit from the Acton School to Soledad on Crown Valley should be reduced to 25 MPH and the center double striped.
It has been L A County Public Works avowed position that it is their job to speed traffic through communities. I find that unsatisfactory. I believe the relatives of persons in the community who were killed or injured by speeders should bring an appropriate action against Public Works for their refusal to add more stop signs.
>It is Government's job to protect the residents of the community first, and not to facilitate people speeding through the community for the benefit of the Antelope Valley Commuters.
